JUSTICE
FOR HEALTHCARE WORKERS CAMPAIGN
The
same healthcare system that is unaffordable or inadequate for
many Vermonters, doesn't provide the resources for healthcare
providers
to provide effective, quality healthcare.
NURSING
LEGISLATION INTRODUCED IN THE VERMONT LEGISLATURE
Since
the historic RN union election victory in October
2002 at Fletcher Allen Health Care (FAHC), a number
of RNs and other healthcare workers involved in the
Justice For Healthcare Workers Campaign have been
working with Vermont legislators to develop legislative
proposals to ease the crisis in their profession.Click

HMO’s, for-profit
healthcare, and a lack of a voice from the people giving the
care
has created a crisis for both patients and caregivers. We know
it can’t continue like this. The goal of the Justice
For Healthcare Workers Campaign is to work towards real change
in the healthcare
industry. ORGANIZING
HEALTHCARE WORKER UNIONS
We think it starts by making healthcare workers’
voices heard about issues of patient care and bringing them together
by organizing healthcare worker unions.
Whether
we work in acute care,
primary care, long term care or public health, we are facing similar
challenges to provide quality healthcare.
THE CHANGE HAS ALREADY BEGUN
In 1998, the nurses at Copley Hospital organized a union to join the
nurses already organized at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital, Brattleboro
Retreat Hospital and Rutland Memorial Hospital. In August of
2000,
the workers at Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center became the
first organized private nursing home in Vermont. On March 15th, 240
mental health workers and others formed a union at the Brattleboro
Retreat, joining the nurses who had been organized for over 10 years.
The Justice
For Healthcare Workers Campaign is uniting all these workers with
public health nurses, school nurses, other mental health workers and
unorganized healthcare workers across the Vermont to address issues
such as short staffing and patient care.
SUPPORTING
EACH OTHER'S STRUGGLES
The Campaign is run by a volunteer committee of healthcare workers
from facilities throughout Vermont. We support each other’s
struggles and work towards our goals of quality healthcare for all
Vermonters and improving the resources and working conditions of healthcare
providers so that we can provide quality health care. |
