PLEASE
DONATE TO THE VERMONT WORKERS' CENTER
There’s
nothing else like it in Vermont . . . an organization mobilizing
to fight for workers’ rights all across the state.
Please consider becoming a Workers’ Center Sustainer.
Being a Sustainer means you’ll give at least $5 or $10 a month,
or $50 to $100 dollars a year. This relatively small amount of money
will make a big difference for the important struggle ahead. Since
the Workers’ Center cannot get grants from corporate foundations,
they need to be supported by regular folks like you.

WHAT
WE'VE BEEN DOING!
Over
the past year, when workers faced trouble, the Vermont Workers’
Center:
*
Launched Our Justice For Healthcare Workers Campaign,
which first supported healthcare workers at Berlin Health
& Rehab, which eventually became the first unionized private
nursing home in Vermont, settling a union contract January
29th. These courageous workers have made short-staffing and
proper care for residents a public issue in Vermont and as
a result the State of Vermont has begun to implement minimum
staffing ratios for every nursing home in the state.
* Then provided community for 240 hospital workers
who organized for livable wages and fair treatment
at the Brattleboro Retreat on March 15th despite strong anti-union
activities.
*
Mobilized community and political support for the 1,119 Registered
Nurses at Fletcher Allen, who had an amazing victory
by voting to form their union on October 4th, so they could
speak up for their patients and themselves.
*
Organized significant community support for school support staff
workers in Montpelier to get them livable wages and
respect in their contract.
* Supported teachers at Caledonia North, who won their
fight for a fair contract this past January.
* Worked with construction workers to put pressure on
Fletcher Allen to use union Vermonters on the hospital’s
Renaissance Project, which would mean decent wages, benefits
& working conditions for the men and women working on that
enormous project.
*
Supported ironworkers, who went on an Unfair Labor
Practice strike when their rights to organize were violated.
* Helped mobilize opposition to slashes in public services
and public layoffs, by opposing the huge cuts to the
State Budget.
* Organized a protest rally, which successfully stopped
a union-busting corporate seminar at Gallagher &
Flynn in Burlington on May 14th.
* Held rallies, a public forum, and a benefit dinner
for striking bus drivers at Wheels Transportation, who
were on strike for over eight weeks starting in May.
* Helped build for the 2nd Annual Labor Day Weekend
Parade & Picnic in Burlington, celebrating workers'
contributions and struggles, which drew over 500 people on August
31st.
* Continued to assist thousands of non-union Vermonters
on the Vermont Workers’ Rights Hotline and working
on a Vermont Workers’ Rights Handbook. |
